报告内容:
Resilience-based design has seen major developments during the last two decades. As a design philosophy, it aims to improve rather than predict the performance of a structural system. Research efforts have so far focused on extreme loading conditions with the majority of them addressing earthquake resilience, i.e. how to design a structural system to return to functionality after a short, if not immediate, time after a strong earthquake. The seminar will present the outcomes of three distinct research projects on resilience-based design. The first project is on seismic-resistant steel braced frames, where resilience is realized with rapid replacement of energy-dissipative stainless-steel devices. The goal is to show that damage and residual drifts can be controlled without the need for expensive and complicated self-centering mechanisms. The second project is on steel-concrete composite bridges under heavy traffic loading and aggressive environments leading to corrosion and/or fatigue, where resilience is realized with rapid replacement of the concrete deck or any other deteriorating structural component. The goal is to show that resilience-based design should cover both extreme natural/man-made hazards and long-term deterioration mechanisms. The third project is on steel seismic-resistant EBFs, where resilience is realized with rapid replacement of a bolted short or intermediate steel link. The goal is to show that there is still room for research that has an obvious effect on fabrication cost and life-safety under strong earthquakes. In this particular case, research achieved immediate impact on everyday seismic-resistant design practice through full adaptation in Eurocode 8.
报告人简介:
Prof. Karavasilis is the full Professor of Steel Structures in the Department of Civil Engineering of the University of Patras and Owner of a Structural Engineering firm. Prior to joining the University of Patras, he held academic appointments at Lehigh University (Post-Doc), University of Oxford (Lecturer), University of Warwick (Associate Professor), and University of Southampton (Chaired Professor). He is actively engaged in academic administration (Director of the Structural Division at the University of Patras for more than 4 years), research publishing (published more than 60 journal papers and two books on design of steel structures), management of research grants (funding exceeding 3 million euros), and teaching (undergraduate and MSc courses on steel structures). He has carried out under his full responsibility (signature for permission for construction) the structural design of a large number of projects and served as specialist consultant for few very large infrastructure investments in Greece including logistic centers and steel wind turbine installations. He is interested in policies for higher education as well as directives for the built environment, and how they contribute to sustainable growth on a wider scale.
